Basrah University and Schlumberger Middle East signed a memorandum of joint scientific cooperation in several fields that would develop education, training and expertise of both parties to benefit university students, graduates and the visual community as well as the oil and gas industry.
The agreement was signed by the university president, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, with the general manager of Schlumberger Iraq, Mr. Wassim Azem.
The two sides agreed to cooperate to enrich and contribute to the field of engineering, in particular in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering and other scientific disciplines, as well as identifying and evaluating possible opportunities for scientific and technical projects at the university in which Schlumberger can provide advice and support.
The two sides emphasized the use of the means and capabilities of the university, including training centers and headquarters, to support Schlumberger employees and develop their skills, as well as conduct joint studies related to the impact of oil and gas industry operations on the public health of local communities.
The President of the University of Basrah, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, stated that this is not the first work that the university has accomplished in order to serve the country and the governorate, and that it has great repercussions on the environmental, health and economic reality by creating job opportunities for graduates and the unemployed, and that our university absorbs numbers of students that exceed the universities of countries themselves, and we will invest in projects and expand the horizons of the University of Basrah in the near future.
The General Manager of Schlumberger Iraq, Mr. Wassim Azem, expressed his pleasure at signing the memorandum of cooperation between the company and the University of Basrah, stressing that each of them has a rich, long and vibrant history, as the Schlumberger name has been closely and distinctly associated with the Iraqi oil industry since 1938.
Azem added that this memorandum will pave the way for cooperation between us to encourage and sponsor research and development operations to achieve advanced research in oil applications and alternative energy to serve society.
