The President of the University of Basrah, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, met with the ministerial committee for establishing a number of universities in the governorate, headed by the Assistant Director General for Technical Affairs at the Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up, Dr. Haider Hassan Mashali, and the membership of the Supervisory Authority for Scientific Affairs, the Department of Construction and Projects, the Legal Department, as well as the Administrative and Financial Department, in the presence of deans and assistants of the colleges of Arts, engineering, science, pharmacy, and managers of some concerned departments.
After the meeting, the committee toured the site for the development of Al-Zubair University (Al-Mirbad), which is to be established in Al-Zubair district, west of Basra.
The president of the university indicated that innovation is not a luxury, but rather a necessity of the current stage, and it is in the supreme interest of the country and the governorate to develop universities and not to conduct an expansion in the university itself, and our university is a destination for science seekers from inside and outside Iraq, so we will seek to establish the University of Al-Zubair and the University of Al-Zahra for medical and health sciences, as well as the University of Shatt al-Arab.
The Chairman of the Ministerial Committee, Dr. Haider Mashali, confirmed that the creation of formations affiliated with a specific university is within the competence of the ministry, but the creation of a university itself requires the approval of the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers.
