A PhD thesis in the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Basrah, discussed the preparation and determination of the effectiveness of a sheep pox virus vaccine coated with chitosan particles for mucosal administration.
The thesis of the researcher Mazen Razzaq Kazem included a study of the effect of sheep smallpox disease and its epidemiology in the Iraqi fields, where the nano-vaccine was manufactured, which is considered the first in the world, in a way that it is given through drops in the nose, different from the classical injection method under the skin, and it was tested in groups of sheep, and the vaccinated lambs showed a humoral immune and systemic cellular immunity, in addition to high local immunity in the form of antibodies in the mucous tissues of the respiratory tract, and research papers were submitted to obtain a patent for this vaccine.
The thesis concluded that the vaccine contributes to the complete eradication of the disease, as it provides high coverage for vaccination of flocks of sheep, as it is easy to administer at a lower cost, and its effect on mucosal immunity by preventing infection if the virus enters, which is often through inhalation.
