An overview of the activities of the Cultural Center at the University of Basra
In order to expand the university’s cultural base and affirm its presence as cultural ruins, and in order to consolidate the university’s ties to society, he established the Cultural Center in 1973 to be a link between Basra University and the community .. and aims to embrace and encourage literary, scientific and artistic capabilities and pay attention to the national heritage and its mission.
The center invites thinkers and lecturers from inside and outside the country who are distinguished in the fields of literature, science and art. It also seeks to cooperate with the university institutions in organizing scientific, cultural and artistic seasons, holding periodic matches in the field of literature, art and poetry and providing incentives for creators in them. The center works to encourage visits and deepen bonds Between cultural centers in Iraqi universities and benefit and exchange of experiencesFor the purpose of advancing the center to take on its role in achieving its goals, its organizational structure consisted of a set of activities that reflect those goals, which are intellectual and cultural activity, literary activity, and artistic activity, which in turn includes people of plastic arts, musical arts, detailing, sewing, photography and videography
Its activities:
For the past eighteen years, the center has been able to contribute to revitalizing the cultural movement in the governorate and the southern region in general through its literary, cultural and artistic programs, and to strengthen its relationship with cultural organizations and institutions in the city of Basra (Writers and Writers Union, Artists Syndicate, Theaters Directorate ...)-.In order to advance the literary and artistic reality of the governorate, this has been clearly demonstrated through the center’s many activities that are difficult to enumerate for its abundance first, and for the divergence of these activities and their differences secondly, but we try to summarize their topics as follows: -
Lectures and seminars: - The center hosted the finest elite of thought, science, politics and literature to enrich its cultural and literary programs and revive the cultural seasons that it holds monthly.
Literary Festivals and Evening: - Basra witnessed many literary events that the Cultural Center had the credit for organizing in which well-known writers (Iraqis and Gulf Arabs) participated. The Center also organized the Qatari Festival for Young Poets. Which was held for two consecutive years, the first for the period from 19-22 / 4/1980 and the second for the period from 10-13 / 3/1981, in which dozens of young poets participated.The whole country, its role was not limited to poetry and poetry sessions, and each poetry session was followed by critical notes. The two festivals had wide repercussions in the Iraqi literary arena, but the exceptional circumstances that the country went through prevented it from continuing. However, the festival returned after eight years with a new look and with a new name (Al-Sayyab Forum) ... The (First Sayyab Forum) was held for the period from 3/7/3/1989, in which a group of poets and writers participated in the literature .. And the (Second Sayyab Forum) was held for the period from 3/3/1990 and it was about literature and cinema, in which many Qatari artists and writers participated in it.Theatrical activity: The center has a theatrical troupe called (the university theater troupe) that includes amateur students and the theater works are supervised by a theater staff from the center’s affiliates.
_ Art exhibitions: _ The center holds annually many art exhibitions (drawing, calligraphy, decoration, and photography) for artists from the Center's affiliates as well as for talented students in the university's faculties.
_ Publication: _ The center publishes cultural and literary publications such as poetry or fictional collections. The center also publishes a series of important books, including the Basra Encyclopedia of Civilization in its geographical, historical, intellectual and cultural axes
