The University of Basrah agreed to establish the Board of Directors of the Museum of Natural History, headed by the director of the museum, Dr. Namir Abdul Karim Khudair, which conducted its first meeting last July.
The aim of establishing the council is the scientific planning of the museum and supervising the activities of the scientific departments.
The President of the University of Basrah, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, stated that the establishment of the Board of Directors of the Museum of Natural History is the seed that will form the scientific departments of the museum, to be a scientific research center later, with its publications that will raise the university's indicators in international rankings.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Museum, Dr. Namir Abdul Karim Khudair, stressed the necessity of activating the museum’s kournal, which has been in sync for decades, and qualifying the mummification staff and developing their skills by involving them in specialized courses for mummification, whether inside or outside Iraq, as well as striving to include the museum within the international museums through communication and making agreements and cooperation mechanisms with well-known international museums and training of special staff on the mechanisms of classification and coding of works according to scientific foundations.
The members of the Council suggested the need to start returning the museum to its old building and rehabilitating it, given that the current museum building was not designed to be a museum and is not suitable for expansion and accommodating the scientific departments to be established. The Council will adopt the redistribution of the museum halls and exhibits on a studied scientific basis, according to the available models, and start adding insects, plants and seeds to the exhibits.
