.The PhD thesis entitled (The Secretary-General of the United Nations, U Thant, and his position on the Arab-Israeli conflict 1967-1971) was discussed in the Department of History at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.
The thesis presented by the student Ali Hussein Issa included four chapters (U Thant and the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1961 until June 1967, the Israeli aggression on June 5, 1967, and U Thant’s position on it, U Thant’s attempts to establish peace between Israel and its neighboring Arab countries 1968-1971, and the problems after the war of June 5th, 1967, and U Thant’s position on them).
The thesis aims to identify the position of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, U Thant, on the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1967-1971, and to know the position he took during that period, as well as the most important problems he faced and the extent of their impact on his positions towards the Arab-Israeli conflict.
The thesis concluded that the Secretary-General can play a prominent political role in international relations, trying to find peaceful solutions to everything that threatens world peace, based on his duty as Secretary-General of the United Nations. After U Thant was elected Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1961, the Arab-Israeli conflict began to turn toward tension after it Israel intended to divert the waters of the Jordan River with the aim of controlling Arab waters.
