The master’s thesis by student Ahmed Hussein Ali from the Civil Engineering Department at the College of Engineering was discussed. The study included that many buildings around the world were not initially built to withstand seismic forces, so the current structures need seismic fortification. Practical research has explored different strengthening techniques and evaluated their success during earthquakes. The current study used non-linear time history analysis to compare the seismic response of the structural structure before and after strengthening the structural columns. The researcher concluded that There are two ways to reinforce building columns: (1) the column is reinforced for its full height, and (2) only part of the column height is reinforced (1 meter along the potential plastic joint). All techniques used aim to achieve a complete composite effect (full bonding) between the reinforcement material and the pre-existing concrete columns. SAP2000 software was used for structural analysis in strict adherence to FEMA standards for bridge and column hinges.
