A master thesis defense at the College of Science discuses Some elements, hormones and antioxidant enzymes in blood of workers at Southern Refineries.
The scientist (Luma Sabri) has clarified that this clinical study aimed to identify the effect of exposure of workers at Al- Shuaiba Refinery in Basra/Iraq, on a daily basis during working hours, to gases, petroleum vapors, and hazardous chemicals in these emissions, which have harmful effects on the antioxidant systems in the human body. These chemical compounds are very dangerous and can cause cancer. The current study included 80 people from Shuaiba refinery workers in Basra who work in two sites where petroleum gases and vapors are present, namely the production and docks departments. Their ages ranged between (22-55) years.
Biochemical variables and their relationship to the extent of exposure to pollution from oil industries among some workers in southern refineries, including the Basra refinery, were evaluated using several methods and measurements. They were characterized by accuracy and validity in terms of comparing the results with reference studies, in addition to statistical treatment to achieve the highest degree of reliability sufficient for prevention and protection of workers during continuous exposure.
