The College of Arts at the University of Basrah conducted a discussion session about"Common Errors in Translating Passports and their Contents."
The discussion session, which was by lecturers Professor Zainab Sami and Assistant Professor Ahmed Falih Rabea, emphasised the need for a legal translator to have a complete awareness of the peculiarities of legal language before beginning to translate any legal work. Legal features are regarded as the foundation of professional legal translation practice.
The language of legal discourse is characterized by its routine and rigidity in vocabulary, which cannot be surpassed or substituted for any purpose. These legal templates distinguish legal discourse and are often challenging for those outside the realm of understanding and using legal language.
The session highlighted attempts to simplify legal discourse and make it accessible to the general public. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter endorsed a law for this purpose.
At the end of the session, the presenter recommended the necessity for legal translators to be familiar with the nature of the text they are dealing with.
