The College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah, in collaboration with the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Directorate and the Women's Empowerment Unit, organized a specialized workshop titled "A Drug-Free National Goal" to reinforce awareness of addiction risks and protect community safety.
The workshop featured a strategic lecture delivered by Legal Colonel (Ali Mohsen Hamid), reviewing the catastrophic effects of narcotics on human biological systems, particularly the central nervous and respiratory systems. The lecturer clarified the precise concept of addiction as a state of physical and psychological compulsion that deprives individuals of the ability to perform their duties, warning of the severe health and social repercussions left by this plague.
The session additionally analyzed social factors leading to deviation, including family breakdown and the absence of institutional supervision, while providing diagnostic evidence to identify early addiction signs such as sudden lifestyle changes, mood swings, and significant weight loss. The lecture prominently highlighted legal methods to distinguish narcotics, warning citizens against exploitation by traffickers in the unconscious transportation of prohibited substances.
The workshop concluded by clarifying the stringent laws governing traffickers and users, with specific warnings directed to women regarding caution when purchasing medicines or cosmetic products from uncertified centers. The participation emphasized the necessity of synergy between academic and security institutions to create a fortified national environment that utilizes science and education as weapons against contemporary challenges.
