The Department of Geography at the College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra held a discussion panel calling on Iraq to re-evaluate international agreements related to transboundary rivers, and the impact of the deterioration of water resources regarding the Shatt al-Arab.
The episode aims to demonstrate the extent of the deterioration in water resources to which the Shatt al-Arab River was subjected after the conclusion of the Algiers Agreement of 1975, and to benefit from international law to guarantee Iraq’s right to water.
The seminar, presented by graduate student Zahra Thaer Ahmed, showed that international law emphasized ensuring the protection of the aquatic environment of rivers and its sustainability for future generations, and exploiting this deterioration as a justification for renegotiating the agreement in a way that the practices of the two countries are consistent with current international obligations regarding environmental protection, climate change and the promotion of sustainable development. And including the principle of sustaining the flow of fresh water, through joint cooperation between Iraq and Iran.
