The problem of domestic violence is a social-psychological phenomenon that all developed and developing societies alike suffer from at different rates. It is a serious phenomenon that threatens the security and integrity of the family. It is one of the negative phenomena, and its appearance is considered a failure in social upbringing, which represents the cornerstone of family construction. It has several forms, including physical, psychological, verbal, and sexual. Among the causes are the biological factors inherent in inherited genes that make a person naturally violent, as well as the economic causes represented by poverty and unemployment, the social causes of addiction to drugs and alcohol, poor family upbringing, and war crises, the causes of reputation and honor, and inequality between men and women, in addition to other causes. Addressing domestic violence lies in activating the force of the law and holding accountable people who commit violence against people or family members.
Governments should abolish old laws and put an end to violence. Therefore, we call on the Iraqi legislator to implement the exceptions mentioned in the laws, especially in the field of legal age or extenuating excuses for honorable motives.
With the speedy enactment of the draft law against domestic violence.
