The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra organized the scientific symposium entitled Climate Changes and their Impact on Biodiversity. The lecture addresses the close relationship between climate changes and the spread and distribution of plant and animal organisms in different environments.
Teaching lecturer Dr. Faten Latif pointed out that when land is converted for agriculture, some animal and plant species may lose their habitat and face extinction. However, climate change plays an increasingly important role in the decline of biodiversity. It has changed marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems around the world.
The lecturer explained the concept of biological diversity, the genetic diversity of biological species, and the diversity of ecosystems. Biodiversity is the living fabric of which we are both actors and dependent. It includes the natural environment and living organisms such as plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, etc., as well as all the relationships that bind living organisms and the interactions between them on the one hand, and between these living organisms and their environmental milieu on the other hand.
The lecturer discussed that biodiversity plays an essential role in the functioning of ecosystems that guarantee all aspects of life on Earth, such as forests, water, coral reefs, soil, and even the atmosphere. These systems provide us with countless vital services for agriculture, soil renewal, climate control, coastal protection, and environmental quality. Air, water, pollination, medicines we derive from nature, food, medicine and clothing.
