The Department of English at the College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra organized a panel discussion on updating the concept of 'the sublime' in English literature.
The episode aimed to introduce the concept of the sublime, the true meanings of this term, the history of its appearance, and the extent to which writers were influenced by it.
The episode presented by Professor Dr. Alaa Abdul Hussein Hashem Al-Abadi included an explanation of the recent updates to this concept, especially by critic Roland Barthes, and the aesthetic evaluation of the artistic work, which does not depend on the intensity of feelings in the text as much as it depends on the artistic process and stylistic influences. The researcher explained that the text is neutral and has no fixed color. The pleasure that the text offers us does not come from the regular language, grammar, or style, but rather comes from his experiences and impressions in a special and unexpected artistic way that appears in the text
