
The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra held a scientific symposium entitled (International Agreements and the Iraq Program on Climate Change). The lecturer, Dr. Saeed Kazem Ahmed, explained in his lecture entitled the concept of climate, climate change, and the role of greenhouse gases.
The lecturer pointed out that gaseous emissions played a role in perpetuating the phenomenon of global warming and the concentration of carbon dioxide, which increased significantly during the period from 1750 to 2019, as stated in the synthesis report issued in 2023 by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Dr. Saeed Kazem Ahmed also touched on international agreements to limit this dangerous phenomenon and the conferences that were held in this regard, starting from the first conference in 1995 until the last conference in 2023. He also discussed in his lecture the indicators and effects of climate change in the world and in Iraq in particular, and the Iraqi government’s measures to confront it through its participation. In international conferences and programmes, and signing and joining international agreements related to this phenomenon.
In conclusion, he explained to the attendees the government program called the Mesopotamia Revitalization Project to confront climate change presented by the Iraqi government in 2021, which consists of nine vital and economic programs, and the Iraq Climate Change Conference held in Basra in 2023 and the important recommendations that it issued.
