The Department of Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Education at the College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra organized a discussion panel on the rule of the illiterate people in understanding the Qur’anic discourse according to Al-Shatibi.
The seminar aimed to understand Sharia law and interpret the Qur’an according to the issue of the custom of the Arabs, and Al-Shatibi’s opinion on the rule of the custom of the illiterate.
The episode presented by Dr. Ali Dhigham Taher showed that the issue of the Arabs’ custom in understanding Sharia law and interpreting the Qur’an is considered a basic methodological control, and that Al-Shatibi expanded on this rule and stated that understanding the Qur’an and Sharia is based on the custom of the illiterate people and the extent of their understanding and awareness. Based on Al-Shatibi’s understanding, it is necessary for the Arabs to remain The state of illiteracy and their lack of transmission in science and knowledge, and this contradicts the miracle of the Qur’an, which is a departure from what is usual for the Arabs in the methods of their language and its meanings, and its miraculousness lies in the abundance of its meanings and the brevity of its pronunciation and is not what is usual for the illiterate.
