The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra held a scientific symposium on diabetes in dentistry. Diabetes has many complications and side effects that may develop into diseases that greatly affect the patient’s quality of life and the complications of diabetes on the mouth, teeth and gums. The symposium, which was delivered by assistant lecturer Hala Abbas Hussein, covered an overview of the most important and common oral manifestations of diabetes, the most important of which are dry mouth, burning in the mouth, frequent bacterial and fungal infections, gum infections and ulcers, in addition to a noticeable increase in the rate of tooth decay in diabetic patients compared to healthy people. The symposium recommended the importance of the role of the dentist in treating these manifestations and contributing to the discovery of people with diabetes who have not been previously diagnosed by paying attention to these manifestations, treating them, and sending suspected patients to additional laboratory tests.
