The thesis tackles Exploring Narrative Structure and Focalization in Faulkner's Appendix of "The Sound and the Fury" in Terms of Mieke Bal's Model : A Stylistic-Narrative Perspective.
The current study investigates narrative structure and focalization in Faulkner's Appendix of The Sound and the Fury through applying Mieke Bal's model of focalization. This study is concerned with conducting a stylistic-narrative analysis to each section of The Appendix through focusing on linguistic devices used by the focalizer to arrive at his attitudes and beliefs. Analyzing The Appendix helps to understand The Sound and the Fury that is why this study focuses on the relationship between The Appendix and The Sound and the Fury aiming to reduce the ambiguity of the original novel. Examining the model, this study focuses on the narrator, non-narrative comments, focalization, description, characters, time, and location that serve the objectives of the study.
The thesis falls into five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, including the aims, hypotheses, procedures, limits, data, and the problems of the study. The theoretical part is established in chapter two. Chapter three constitutes the practical part in which The Appendix is analyzed. Chapter four provides a comparison between the three phases and the discussion of the results. Finally, the study is concluded with chapter five which presents the results and the concluding remarks of the analysis of the Appendix.
The thesis has come up with the following conclusions: The focalizer and the focalized can be investigated in terms of Mieke Bal on The Appendix of The Sound and the Fury. Also, the researcher concludes that The Appendix of the Sound and the Fury has a plot. In Addition to that, analyzing The Appendix helps to understand The Sound and the Fury.
