The Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance at the College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra organized a scientific symposium on intellectual extremism and hatred of others, its causes and psychological treatments.
The scientific symposium aimed to shed light on a dangerous phenomenon that threatens the entities of societies and disturbs political systems and governments because of its negative effects on the values of peaceful coexistence, the values of democracy, and tolerance among individuals.
The symposium, in which a number of professors participated, included a review of the psychological structure of hate speech, the psychological and social dimensions of intellectual extremism, proposed treatments to reduce its negative effects, the role of the media in creating intellectual extremism, and the importance of the role of academic institutions in reducing the spread of this negative phenomenon, with an explanation of Islam’s point of view on Extremism and hatred of others
In a set of recommendations, the symposium called for including the values of tolerance, peaceful living, and staying away from extremism and hatred in school curricula, and urging graduate students to write and research this dangerous phenomenon and develop psychological treatments for it.
