The College of Dentistry at Basra University held a workshop entitled “How to collect clinical samples from patients and how to transport them to the laboratory and deal with them through basic concepts.”
The workshop aimed to educate graduate students on how to collect clinical samples from patients and how to transport them to the laboratory and deal with them through the basic concepts that ensure their safe arrival to the laboratory and the mechanism by which clinical samples are preserved and disposed of using the usual sterilization methods to maintain community and environmental safety.
The workshop, which was attended by Professor Dr. Salman Sahib Atshan, a medical microbiologist, included the critical criteria for rejecting samples sent to the laboratory that do not achieve accurate results through damaged samples, delays, or samples not conforming to the patient’s prescription.
The assistant professor Dr. Raghad Jassim and Najwan, contributed to the success of the workshop through their active participation in the practical aspect, providing everything that was useful and necessary for the student and providing them with all the requirements for the tests.
The workshop recommended that samples be stored at an appropriate temperature until they are examined. There are different temperatures for storing samples: body temperature 37°C, room temperature 22°C, refrigerator temperature 4°C, and freezing temperature 20-70.
It also recommended marking the sample with sufficient information in order to differentiate it from one another, and it must at least be marked with the following information: the patient’s name, hospital or patient lounge number, age or date of birth, gender, and date of sample collection.
