The English Language Department at the College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra organized a seminar on developing the skill of speaking through literary texts.
The seminar aimed to identify ways to enhance and develop speaking skills and acquire literary competence, and the role of the teaching staff in motivating and refining this skill among students.
The seminar presented by the teacher, Alaa Hussein Sharhan, included an explanation of the importance of literature in exploring the language, enhancing speaking skills, and acquiring literary competence and literary awareness, through a variety of literary texts, to understand how to teach the speaking skill effectively in the subject of literature, and to develop students’ inspiration in studying literature.
The episode showed that knowledge of vocabulary and grammar are two essential factors for learning a foreign language, and both of them affect the learner’s speaking performance as they are an essential aspect of achievement in the English language, and debate between students provides the opportunity to monitor linguistic proficiency and enhance their communication skills.
