The Faculty of science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on the assessment of hydrocarbon pollutants near oil fields in southern Iraq, and the seminar attended by lecturer Magdalena Aziz Rasen included the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) in the soil of oil fields. There is a significant correlation between the total total hydrocarbons in the soil and the percentage of total organic carbon (TOC%). By combining the concentration of the result of this study with previous studies, the concentration levels fall within it and in other cases exceed it. There is a strong correlation between soil TPH and % TOC. By combining the results of the study with previous studies, the concentration levels fall within and sometimes exceed them.The seminar recommended treatment strategies: study and implement effective treatment strategies such as Phytotherapy (using plants to remove pollutants), biological treatment (using microorganisms), or extraction of soil vapor to reduce the total concentration of hydrocarbons while highlighting the risks associated with living in or near the contaminated area (Zubair oil field) educate people about the potential health risks caused by exposure to high levels of total hydrocarbons.
