I researched a doctoral thesis in the Department of Geography/College of Education for Human Sciences/University of Basra, (The role of land transportation in the localization of large manufacturing industries in Basra Governorate)
The thesis by student Mahmoud Ghazi Ghanem aims to explain the role of land transportation in the localization of large manufacturing industries in Basra Governorate by providing its services in delivering raw materials, labor, energy sources, and all the needs of the industrial site on the one hand, and delivering industrial products to consumer markets on the other hand.
The thesis dealt with the role of the land transport sector in the localization or establishment of large manufacturing industries in the study area, due to the impact that land transport has on various economic and service activities, especially industry, as transport is the factor linking the elements of production (raw material, energy, labor) and others. Transport contributes to encouraging industrial specialization and achieving greater production efficiency.
The study concluded that the number of large manufacturing facilities reached (63) industrial facilities in the study area, which include four industrial types: food industries, non-metallic (construction) mineral industries, chemical industries, and basic metal industries. These industries were distributed among five administrative units in the area. In the study, Al-Zubair District ranked first in terms of the number of industrial establishments, with a rate of (9.53%), while Basra District ranked second with a rate of (6.20%), and Abu Al-Khasib District came in third place, with a rate of (19%). As for Al-Deir District, it came in fourth place with a rate of (5%), and it was ranked last in the share of Al-Faw District with one industrial facility, with a rate of (5.1%) of the total industrial establishments.
The study made the following recommendations:
Developing and improving the land road network in Basra Governorate, including expanding main roads and improving secondary roads, and providing the services these roads need to meet industrial transportation needs. Establishing integrated logistics centers in Basra Governorate that undertake the provision of transportation, storage, and distribution services for the purpose of improving efficiency. Supply chain for large manufacturing industries in the province.
Strengthening cooperation between the local government in Basra Governorate and transportation companies and manufacturing industries by developing strategic partnerships and exchanging knowledge and experiences. Conducting future studies to estimate the future demand for land transportation in Basra Governorate and determining the investments necessary to meet this demand and achieve sustainable development
