A doctoral thesis in the Department of Geography - College of Education for Humanities - University of Basra examined the spatial variation of residential migration in the city of Amara and its future prospects.
The thesis of the student Falah Daryoul Gami aims to analyze the spatial variation of residential migration and its trends in the city of Amara and to know the natural and human geographical characteristics and to know the determinants affecting the drawing of urban expansion trends in the city of Amara, and to give a picture that reflects the historical dimension of the city since its inception until the current reality, in addition to identifying the uses of urban land in the study area and the extent of its functional efficiency within the limits of its area. And to predict future residential migration based on the data and analysis of mathematical equations based on the urban expansion of the city and its population growth.
The thesis included a field study, with the researcher dividing the city into (3) residential regions that contained (67) residential neighborhoods, using devices specific to the problem and scientific techniques in the analysis, reinforced by a questionnaire form to reach logical results. The thesis concluded in light of our study of residential migration in the city of Amara, the following conclusions were reached: The city of Amara witnessed high growth rates, as its population increased from (25,730) people in (1875) to (638,205) people according to population estimates for the year (2022). Thus, the population size is constantly developing according to the census years. This is due to the natural increase in the number of births, in addition to the increasing migration towards the city. This requires adding a new area to the city with each increase in the population, and then this was reflected in the residential migration. The study also showed that most residential migrations occur between the city's residential neighborhoods. The study also revealed that the transitional region recorded the highest number of families moving to it (738) families, at a rate of (57.5%), while the weakness region came in second place with the migration of (359) families, at a rate of (27.9%), while the ambition region came in third place with (187) families, at a rate of (14.6%) of the total families moving in the city. The thesis recommended that there should be interest from the local government and other governmental institutions in seeking to develop the housing sector and future planning for the expansion of the city to know the size of residential migration, its trends and characteristics, as it is one of the important pillars of urban planning, and planning to find a balance between the number of residents and housing units in the city area through the contribution of the Amara Municipality and housing associations with a fundamental role in the phenomenon of residential migration by providing residential plots of land and distributing them to the city's residents at prices that are consistent with the individual income of heads of households, in addition to studying the reasons for residential migration from the cities of Maysan Governorate and the resulting effects in the field of housing, especially through its impact on the prices of residential land and housing units and the reasons for their increase, with the development of appropriate solutions for them
