The College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry, discussed a master's thesis on the preparation, diagnosis and evaluation of superabsorbent gels derived from acrylamide and tetramethyl urea and their applications in the oil fields. The thesis, presented by the researcher (Mohamed Haitham Ahmed), included: In the oil industry, water must be separated from oil before pumping it for export or refining. The problem is that there is a small amount of the properties of this mixture of oil and water and the effect of factors from water remains attached to the oil, and its separation requires a deep understanding of the different properties and stability of this mixture. This study focused on developing environmentally friendly super absorbent gels with high swelling and absorption capacity, fast swelling rate, low production cost, and good durability (good gel texture) to remove water from (crude oil, gasoline, kerosene and oil) practically. As well as using these gels to absorb a type of water that is present in oil fields and is specified in SH1 and SH2 water (two types of water in the Gharraf oil field) as well as absorbing water vapor and salts, which are considered a problem in refineries (during pumping and transport operations in pipelines, which makes it difficult to get rid of them. In this study, (two types) of super absorbent semi-network interconnected gels (Semi-IPNs) were prepared, where the first type (A-H) of gels prepared from a fixed amount of linear anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) and different amounts of acrylamide (AAm) with N,Ǹ-Methylene bis-acrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinking agent, sodium persulfate (SPS) as an initiator for the polymerization of acrylamide and a fixed amount of tetramethylethylene as an accelerating agent to degrade the initiator. The second type of gels (PETMU) is prepared using tetramethylurea TMU with linear anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) polyelectrolyte, forming a new semi-IPNs gel using hydrogen peroxide as a crosslinking agent.
