The English Department at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basrah organized a discussion session on analyzing racism in the United States against African Americans through language.
The session aimed to shed light on racial discrimination and white supremacy towards other races, and its effects on black minorities in various aspects of their lives.
The session, in which graduate student Zainab Talib lectured, dealt with racism through analyzing two selected novels from American literature, and the differences in forms of racist practices between the past and the present, and their transition from overt to more hidden and complex cases.
The session demonstrated the role of language in revealing racist practices and systems, and the importance of understanding language as an analytical tool that contributes to clarifying social phenomena and various practices associated with racism
