The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra organized a discussion session on the United States policy towards the Republic of Panama 1968-1989. The session aimed to learn about the United States policy and the development of the course of the relationship with Panama, and the United States' concerns about internal events there. The episode, presented by graduate student Hayat Farhan Abdul, discussed the US policy in dealing with Panama, the repercussions of internal events and the military coup led by Omar Torrijos, the Torrijos-Carter Agreement concluded between the two parties, and the increased interference after Manuel Noriega assumed power, who was opposed to the US government, which led to the US attempting to remove Noriega from power through Operation Just Cause in 1989. The episode showed the US policy of bringing dictatorial governments loyal to it by rigging elections or through quasi-military interventions through departments and agencies in the executive structure and the Central Intelligence Agency to bring about a coup that would overthrow any government that threatened its interests in Panama
