The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra and the Women's Affairs Unit, in cooperation with the Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances in Basra, held an awareness seminar entitled "Social Stigma of Drug Addicts and Ways to Confront It Socially". The seminar aimed to shed light on the negative effects of social stigma on addicts and their families, and the importance of creating a supportive environment that allows them to reintegrate into society.
The seminar aims to raise awareness about social stigma by enhancing participants' understanding of the concept of social stigma and its negative effects on addicted individuals and society as a whole, as well as shedding light on the psychological and social effects of stigma.
The seminar, in which Dean of Law Hammam Majeed Abdoun lectured, included several axes that addressed the concept of social stigma and its impact on drug addicts, the reasons for stigmatizing addicts and how this affects their chances of recovery and social integration, as well as the importance of combating stigma to improve treatment opportunities.
The discussions concluded with recommendations calling for increasing community awareness and developing comprehensive rehabilitation programs, which contribute to reducing stigma and enabling addicts to regain their normal lives.
