The lecturer at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra, Muhammad Qahtan Nima, submitted a scientific study to the Directorate of Water Resources in Basra Governorate on the deterioration of the quantitative characteristics of water in the lower part of the Karkheh River Basin-Iran.
The study aimed to know the volume of water in the Karkheh River Basin as it is in direct contact with the Iraqi-Iranian border, and is the most important external source feeding the Hawizeh Marsh and the eastern part of Iraq and the Shatt al-Arab through the Suwaib River.
The study showed the urgent need for the continued flow of water from the north of the Karkheh Basin to its south to continue feeding the Azim Marsh in Iran and the Hawizeh Marsh in Iraq, which suffers from continuous drought in the summer season with the presence of a nature reserve within the Hawizeh Marsh.
The study concluded that the Karkheh River has been exposed to major changes in hydrological characteristics with the increase in the area of dry lands, and the decrease in water discharges due to the construction of the Karkheh Dam.
It is noteworthy that the study has obtained the approval of the Directorate of Water Resources in Basra and scientific benefit from it as it pertains to the work of the directorate
