The College of Dentistry at the University of Basra organized an awareness seminar entitled Drugs: Challenges of the Age and Prospects for Confrontation between Awareness and Law in cooperation with the Educational Guidance and Psychological Guidance Unit at the College.
The seminar aims to shed light on drug abuse, which poses a real threat to our Iraqi society due to its targeting of the most important element in it, namely the youth, who represent the basic pillar on which our society is based. This negatively affects all aspects of the social and economic development that society seeks. Hence, efforts must be combined to eliminate this dangerous phenomenon that is alien to Iraqi society.
The seminar, in which lecturers Dr. Abdul-Ali Hamid Al-Tamimi lectured, addressed the development of Iraqi legislation related to combating drugs, the texts of penalties, and the role of security and judicial authorities in implementing the law.
Professor Dr. Hanaa Abdul-Nabi Al-Abbadi also discussed contemporary challenges and proposals to update the law in a way that enhances efforts to combat drugs.
The symposium recommended identifying the most important social factors in society that lead to drug abuse, as well as the effects of drug abuse on society and the reasons that led to the increased use of narcotic and addictive substances in Iraqi society, the role of the family in protecting children from drug abuse, and finally identifying the role of the media in preventing the phenomenon of drug abuse.
