Scientific Activities | Panel Discussion on (Statins and the Risk of Diabetes):
The Pharmacology and Toxicology Branch at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a highly specialized scientific panel discussion titled: (Statins and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes).
The panel discussion included an informative scientific lecture delivered by Dr. Shaimaa Nadeem. She explained that Statin medications are considered the golden standard for successfully preventing primary and secondary cardiovascular diseases, which unfortunately remain the leading cause of fatalities worldwide.
Dr. Nadeem carefully clarified that despite the general safety and relative tolerance of statins, modern observational studies, rigorous clinical trials, and meta-analyses definitively indicate a noticeable increase in the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), particularly following long-term statin treatment regimens.
The insightful lecture scientifically demonstrated that statins can unfortunately weaken insulin sensitivity and its crucial secretion by (pancreatic beta cells), subsequently increasing insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. The physiological mechanisms inherently involved in these complex processes include: weakened Calcium (Ca2+) signaling specifically in pancreatic beta cells, crucially decreased regulation of (GLUT-4) proteins globally in adipocytes, and decreased insulin signaling. Additionally, the lecture described the effect of statins on Epigenetics, which significantly contributes to statin-induced T2DM.
The lecture decisively concluded with a highly crucial medical recommendation strongly emphasizing the absolute necessity of continuously monitoring patients actively receiving statin treatments clinically by specialized doctors. This safely ensures crucially early diagnosis and perfectly proper management of diabetes overall.
