Reserch at the University of Basrah at the College of Medicine discusses gallstones in children with sickle cell anemia in Basrah. The reserch , presented by Ban Khalil Hassan, a student at the Arab Council for Health Specializations at the Basrah Gynecology and Pediatric Hospital, aims to study the percentage of children with sickle cell anemia in Basrah who suffer from gallstones. The reserch concluded that a large percentage of children with sickle cell anemia suffer from gallstones. The reserch showed that 15% of sickle cell anemia patients suffer from gallstones, and the percentage increases with the severity of the disease. Patients also experience an increase in vascular occlusive crises, increased hospitalization rates, and more frequent blood transfusions than those without these stones. They are also at increased risk of splenic infarction and stroke. Therefore, all sickle cell anemia patients should undergo annual screening for gallstones. The reserch also recommended that all patients with sickle cell anemia, especially those with severe symptoms, undergo annual screening for gallstones.
