The University of Basrah is investigating  the relationship between domestic public debt and the stability of the financial system in the Iraqi economy:
A master's thesis at the College of Administration and Economics, Department of  Banking  and financial sciences, examined the relationship between domestic public debt and financial stability, with a case study of Iraq.
The thesis, presented by researcher Batoul Abbas Hussein Sabr, aims to analyze the relationship between domestic public debt in Iraq and the stability of the financial system during the period (2014-2023). The study also aims to provide recommendations on improving financial stability in Iraq and how to manage public debt efficiently.
The thesis concluded that the accumulation of domestic public debt in Iraq has reached a very large sum of 70 trillion Iraqi dinars. This significant use by the government is due to the lack of diversification of revenue sources. As for the financial system in the Iraqi economy, we observed that it was stable throughout the study period.
The study recommended that although domestic public debt does not affect the stability of the financial system in Iraq, the government must manage it properly when using it, ensuring that the deficit is not negative for the state. It also recommends working to diversify revenue sources and engage in the agricultural, industrial, and tourism sectors to avoid revenue problems when the country is exposed to economic shocks and financial crises
