The Department of geoscience at the college of science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar on sedimentary and mineralogical study of the al-Tayeb sedimentary fan located northeast of Maysan governorate, southern Iraq.. The seminar delivered by the researcher Mustafa Mohammed Jabbar aims to explain sedimentary processes, identify the types of rocks and sources that contributed to the formation of sediments, and understand the impact of tectonic and climatic activity on the evolution of the fan. The study included an integrated approach that includes granular analyses and their techniques, rock and mineral analyses of each part of the sediments (gravel , sand, clay), in addition to the fossil analysis of gravel. The results have shown that the sediments are graded from coarse-grained materials close to the source to fine-grained towards the periphery, with environmental indicators indicating intermittent high-energy deposition. Mineralogical analyses also revealed multiple sources, including carbonate, igneous and metamorphic rocks, while the presence of marine fossils indicated an ancient sedimentary origin from the environments of a carbonate continental shelf.
