A master's thesis at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra explored the nature of narrative interaction in James Joyce's Ulysses through a stylistic analysis based on Susan Lancer's point-of-view model.
The thesis, submitted by student Shahd Jabbar Abdul Hussein, aimed to investigate the manifestations of point of view in Joyce's Ulysses, employing Susan Lancer's model of narrative discourse analysis. The goal was to reveal how the components of this model are utilized in constructing narrative consciousness and shaping the novelistic perspective. The study also sought to demonstrate the role of status, communication, and position in determining the nature of the narrative and guiding the paths of vision within the text.
The thesis included a stylistic and narrative analysis of the main plot stages in the novel, demonstrating that applying Lancer's model allowed for a deeper understanding of narrative mechanisms and provided a comprehensive explanation of point of view in Ulysses. This contributed to offering a new perspective on Joyce's narrative structure and highlighting the novel's broader contribution to reshaping modernist literature
