The College of Science at the University of Basrah organized a seminar entitled (Therapeutic effect of fungal extracts on some types of pathogenic fungi and protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus) by the graduate student Fatima Taher Mohsin Almosawi The study aims to isolate and identify the most important pathogenic yeasts from the oral cavity of children and from the skin (diaper area), extract their DNA, perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR), identify a group of yeast species, construct their phylogenetic trees, isolate the hydatid cyst parasite from the liver of surgical patients, identify it morphologically, and determine its biological activity. Also extract lycopene using a modified method, purify it, and use it as an antibiotic, determining its activity on viability genes and measuring their gene expression levels. The study included collecting 160 samples of pathogenic yeasts, which were isolated and identified morphologically and molecularly, and collecting 18 samples of the parasite, which were identified morphologically. In addition, lycopene was isolated and purified, and its biological activity was measured at the genetic level by measuring the gene expression of vital genes (CLB1, Cox1, ACT1, and actin II). The study recommended further research on the activity of lycopene and its mechanism of action within the organism at the molecular level.
