The Date Palm Research Center at the University of Basrah organized a scientific lecture titled “Date Palm: Sustainable Production from Fruit to Root,” which explored the various products of the date palm and the potential for utilizing them to enhance sustainability and create added value.
The lecture aimed to highlight the importance of benefiting from the palm’s by-products, considering them valuable resources that can be employed in modern industries and traditional crafts, as well as in food, health, and cosmetic applications.
The lecture, delivered by Dr. Imad Hamid Abdul-Samad, reviewed the distinctive nutritional and functional properties of each part of the date palm, explaining how the type of component and its preparation method influence its uses. It also pointed out that many of these by-products are still neglected and treated as waste, despite their significant importance in supporting sustainable production concepts and maximizing the utilization of date palm resources.
