The Polymer Research Center at the University of Basra held a workshop on the preparation and evaluation of composite materials from steel scrap with epoxy resin. The workshop, presented by Dr. Ghufran M. B, focused on preparing composite materials from hot steel scraps produced during the rolling process at the iron and steel plant. After the steel is vibrated, the scraps fall off, are collected, ground to a granular size, and then mixed with epoxy resin to create samples for mechanical, thermal, insulating, conductive, and magnetic measurements. An attenuation device was also used to measure the absorbance. The study included the preparation of pigments from the composite materials and the measurement of their microwave absorption in the 8-12 GHz range. This application has applications in the military field, particularly radar.
