The Department of History at the College of Education for Humanities, University of Basra, organized a seminar on the Red Scare in the United States from 1917 to 1920.
The seminar aimed to shed light on the term "Red Scare" and the measures taken by the United States to counter communist and socialist ideologies.
The seminar, presented by doctoral student Miqdad Abdul Ghaffar Hamid, included an explanation of the term "Red Scare" as a political and media term used to justify repressive measures that restricted freedom of expression and assembly, persecuted labor and leftist movements, and equated political opposition with disloyalty.
The seminar also illustrated how the United States dealt with what it considered a threat to its internal and external security, driven by the perception that communist and socialist ideas posed an existential threat to its political and economic system and national identity. The US sought to prevent the spread of intellectual and social unrest to its political structure in order to maintain its cohesion in the face of what it perceived as a serious challenge
