A thesis at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra examined the concept of non-consent in grammatical argumentation in al-Anbari's (d. 577 AH) book, al-Insaf.
The thesis, submitted by student Alaa Ali Rahim, aimed to uncover the cognitive frameworks that govern and guide Arabic grammatical thought, and to investigate the intellectual mechanisms upon which grammarians relied in constructing and justifying their rules. Understanding these frameworks not only helps in interpreting the opinions of grammarians but also provides a deeper insight into the nature of Arabic grammatical thought as a dialectical and rational approach based on balancing evidence and proof, and drawing its tools and methods of analysis and critique from the heritage of logic and dialectic.
The thesis comprised three chapters, preceded by an introduction and a preface, and followed by a conclusion. The first chapter identified instances of non-consent in al-Insaf, divided into two sections. The second chapter addressed the reasons that led al-Anbari to adopt non-consent in al-Insaf, also divided into two sections. The third chapter examined the consequences of non-consent in al-Insaf, also divided into two sections.
