A master’s thesis at the Faculty of Science, University of Basra, entitled “Study of the Effects of Flower and Seed Extracts of Borago officinalis L. on Some Organs in Male Laboratory Rats (Rattus norvegicus)” was presented by the researcher Zahraa Hajim Abdul Qader.
The thesis aimed to identify the potential harmful effects of borage plant extracts on certain organs. The results indicated that extracts of Borago officinalis contain compounds that may be toxic and can cause damage to body tissues, depending on the concentration and duration of exposure. The findings also showed a possible decrease in body weight, as well as an effect on glycogen content in liver cells.
The study recommended conducting further research to isolate and identify the active compounds of the plant, reduce the toxic content of some of its constituents, and develop safe and effective extraction methods. It also suggested evaluating different doses and exposure periods to determine the safe dosage, in addition to carrying out further studies to investigate the effects of these extracts on other organs.
