Dr. Alaa Hussein Awda Al-Abadi, a professor at the College of Education for Humanities at the University of Basra, presented a critical reading of the short story "A Doll in the Grip of a Giant" by writer Miqdad Masoud.
The reading aimed to cultivate critical awareness and introduce the narrative and symbolic techniques employed by the author in constructing his literary text.
The reading, published in the Civil Dialogue website, included an analytical presentation of the story. The critic addressed the narrative structure and the transformations of the main character, a prisoner, within the confines of his cell, explaining how the text embodies the shift from human existence to objectification through various images and metaphors.
The reading also focused on the symbolism of silence between the prisoner and the jailer, the constraints of space, time, and language, culminating in an ending that suggests hope despite the harshness of the human experience presented in the text
