The College of Pharmacy is organizing a panel discussion on cosmetic dermal fillers for the face.

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Basrah's College of Pharmacy organized a seminar entitled "Side Effects of Using Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers in Facial Cosmetics," as part of a health awareness initiative regarding common cosmetic procedures.

The session included a lecture delivered by Dr. Manal Abdul Khaleq, explaining that the increased demand for cosmetic procedures has led to a significant global rise in the popularity of botulinum toxin and biomaterials.

The lecture reviewed 2021 statistics published by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), which showed that botulinum toxin continues to lead non-surgical procedures with a 17.7% increase compared to 2020.

The seminar also highlighted research-proven health risks resulting from the indiscriminate use of these materials, including eyelid ptosis, muscle weakness in injected areas, and degradation of the immune system, which may leave patients vulnerable to autoimmune diseases.

The seminar aimed to raise awareness about avoiding these injections due to the weakening of the skin's protective layer and to curb the increasing misuse of these materials in unstudied cosmetic applications.
