The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a seminar titled "The Role of C-terminal Telopeptide as a Biomarker in the Diagnosis and Detection of Osteoporosis."
The seminar featured a lecture delivered by Lecturer Anwar Younis, who explained that C-terminal telopeptide (CTx) is released into the blood or urine from Type I collagen during its breakdown. It is used clinically to assess the risk of osteoporosis and monitor the efficacy of anti-resorptive treatments, as elevated levels indicate a higher risk of fractures.
This biomarker serves as a complementary tool to Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scans and is utilized in tracking the effectiveness of osteoporosis medications (bisphosphonates). A reduction in CTX levels by 30% to 60% indicates a positive response to treatment. The test is preferably conducted in the early morning (before 10:00 AM) while fasting to minimize diurnal variations in the biomarker's levels.
