A PhD dissertation at the College of Education for Human Sciences, University of Basra, examined the results of the parliamentary elections in Maysan Governorate during the 2018 and 2021 sessions: A study in political geography.
The dissertation, submitted by student Ahmed Naseer Abdul Zahra, aimed to explore the selection of representatives for the people, the peaceful transfer of power, and the granting of popular legitimacy to the elected government. It also aimed to uphold the principle that the people are the source of authority in a democratic system, and to highlight the organizational role of elections, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the organizational process and its impact on voter turnout.

The thesis comprises three chapters: Chapter One addresses the geography of elections and electoral systems, covering several key areas such as the concept of electoral geography, its origins, historical development, and areas of application, in addition to defining the electoral system and its various types. Chapter Two focuses on the main actors influencing electoral geography, examining a range of human factors that affect voting and elections. Chapter Three addresses the spatial organization of electoral districts, including a study of various aspects such as the geographical distribution of registered voters, the geographical distribution of polling stations, and the geographical distribution of those participating in the voting process.
