The Department of Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, held a panel discussion on nanocapsules. The discussion included a lecture delivered by faculty member Ibtihal Handhal, in which she explained that nanotechnology is the science that studies the physical, chemical, mechanical, and optical properties of materials whose constituent nanoparticles range in size from (1 – 1000 nm). She noted that the physical and chemical properties of particles at the nanoscale are superior to those at the microscale.
Therefore, the lecture aimed to introduce nanocapsules (vesicular systems where the drug is placed in a cavity surrounded by a polymer membrane, with sizes ranging from 10 – 1000 nm) and how to use them as a controlled drug delivery system. This is achieved by administering a smaller dose to the patient with higher therapeutic efficacy and fewer side effects compared to microparticles. Additionally, this allows for longer retention of the drug dose at a specific site, faster absorption of active pharmaceutical ingredients, increased drug bioavailability, and improved patient compliance.
