Basrah - College of Pharmacy Media:
The Department of Pharmacognosy and Medicinal Plants at the College of Pharmacy, University of Basrah, organized a panel discussion titled "Ashwagandha: Therapeutic Potentials and Pharmacological Mechanisms." The discussion included a lecture by faculty member Rafat Mohammed, in which he introduced the Ashwagandha plant (Withania somnifera) as one of the most important plants used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. He also covered the botanical description of the plant, its geographical distribution, and the main parts used medically.
The chemically active compounds, particularly Withanolides, and their vital role were discussed, along with a review of proven pharmacological effects such as anti-anxiety, sleep improvement, anti-inflammatory properties, and neuroprotection. Furthermore, the potential pharmacological mechanisms of the plant's action within the body were explained, and modern therapeutic uses and commercially available products were also addressed.
