A Master's thesis in the Department of Ecology at the College of Science, University of Basra, explored the application of algae in the production of biocoagulants for wastewater treatment.
The thesis, submitted by student Fatima Muhannad Taha, aimed to extract natural coagulants from local algae and evaluate their efficiency in removing turbidity, color, and other pollutants from water, with the goal of finding safe and environmentally friendly alternatives.
The thesis included the isolation of eight types of algae and the extraction of sustainable green coagulants as a natural coagulant for removing some organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater.
The thesis recommended the application of coagulants extracted from algae in the treatment of polluted water as an alternative to chemical coagulants, given their biodegradability and non-toxicity.
