The study included studying and evaluating the characteristics of clay soil compression in the cases of total and partial saturation, through the analysis of soil models taken from (30) wells drilled to a depth of (3 m) in the city of Hilla, Babylon governorate, where the evaluation of compression and subsidence coefficients in the studied sites was conducted using mathematical models to simulate subsidence. The study showed that the soils in the studied area are classified as low-plasticity clay soils, and contain high percentages of silica and calcite minerals compared to clay minerals, and also showed the presence of low soil activity, with the calculation of various compression and bulging coefficients for fully and partially saturated soil models, and comparing the landing results calculated by laboratory methods with the results of the mathematical model, which showed a clear convergence between the two methods. The study recommended the need to adopt the values of compression and subsidence coefficients in the engineering designs of future projects, and expand the conduct of similar studies to include different regions of Iraq, thus contributing to reducing the economic effects resulting from soil subsidence on engineering facilities.
