The master's thesis submitted by student Mohammed Hussein Mahdi Mohsen aimed at a critical-discursive analysis of evaluative language and ideological stance in Margaret Atwood's novel "The Handmaid's Tale." The thesis incorporated analytical methodologies adopted from Fairclough (1992/1995) and Martin and White (2005), in addition to the CorBas linguistic analysis software. The novel was analyzed quantitatively using CorBas, as well as qualitatively using the aforementioned theories.
The study identified a total of 302 evaluative resources distributed across the affective, hierarchical, and discursive positioning systems. The affective system was the most prevalent, with 177 examples, followed by the discursive positioning system with 86 examples. The hierarchical system was the least used, with only 39 examples. These results indicate a significant finding: that evaluative language shapes the ideological character of the novel under consideration. the study.
